WEBINARS

These webinars, hosted by our partners at Resilient Waters and others, highlight practical solutions for flood resilience and salmon recovery. They feature experts from across sectors sharing lessons, tools, and examples that can inform collaborative action in the Lower Fraser.

Our first in a series of workshops dedicated to creating better flood infrastructure for the future of the Lower Mainland. Our first workshop is all about floodgates throughout their lifecycle from planning, design, manufacturing, construction, operations, maintenance, and monitoring.

Our second in a series of workshops dedicated to designing for flood resilience in the Lower Mainland. This workshop focused on in-stream barriers including the use of planning tools to prioritize which barriers and streams to focus work, and how best to address those barriers to maximize multiple benefits including but not limited to flood resilience, salmon habitat, and asset management.

This May 30, 2024 workshop showcased innovative bank stabilization techniques for flood resilience, featuring insights from watershed practitioners, Indigenous stewards, and engineers, followed by a community Q&A.

Agricultural lands in the Lower Fraser are disproportionately affected by flooding, yet farmers can play a critical role in reducing flood risk when supported with the right tools and practices. This webinar highlights on-the-ground examples of how farm-based flood resilience is being advanced locally and internationally. Panelists share practical approaches including nature-based farm practices, farmer-led innovations, and collaborative foodlands restoration initiatives.

A conversation with leaders from Washington State’s Floodplains for the Future initiative on how integrated, multi-benefit floodplain management is being delivered in the Puyallup Watershed. The panel explores collaborative approaches that unite community, agricultural, and salmon recovery goals through coordinated planning and on-the-ground projects.

This webinar explores the growing role of the insurance sector in flood resilience and climate adaptation in the Lower Fraser. Panelists discuss nature-based solutions, insuring flood-prone areas, and how a new National Flood Insurance Program may reshape responsibilities for risk management. Speakers include experts from the University of Waterloo, BC Financial Services Authority, Insurance Bureau of Canada, Westland Insurance, and HUB International.

This webinar explores solutions for improving fish passage and modernizing flood control infrastructure, with a focus on dikes and related systems. Presenters from British Columbia, Washington State, and Nova Scotia share approaches that restore salmon habitat while strengthening community flood resilience. The session highlights nature-based design, drainage innovations, collaborative governance models, and lessons from regions facing similar challenges.

On March 13, 2024, 64 representatives from 14 First Nations and six local governments, from Semá:th to Yale, convened online for the Lower Fraser Floodplains Dialogue for Regional Action: Mid & Up River Gathering. Staff from the BC Ministry of Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) also attended. The previous day, the Coastal and River Tidal subregions had gathered. Dialogue focussed on critical infrastructure, local essential services and interconnectedness across the Lower Fraser.
